The Ardennes Offensive of 1944/45 (German code name Unternehmen “Wacht am Rhein”, also known as the Rundstedt Offensive or in Anglo-American parlance “Battle of the Bulge”) was an attempt by the Wehrmacht to inflict a major defeat on the Western Allied armies and recapture the port of Antwerp. Without the port, the Allies would not have been able to land the supplies they needed to continue their advance. The Battle of the Bulge is considered to be the penultimate German offensive on the Western Front in the Second World War. Hitler hoped to take advantage of the calm created by the Battle of the Bulge on other sections of the front. He therefore also ordered an offensive in Lorraine and Alsace (Unternehmen Nordwind) to smash the US 7th Army. Both offensives failed.
In the winter of 1944, three German armies launched a surprise attack against the 12th Army Group in the east and north-east of Belgium and in parts of Luxembourg. The areas around the towns of Bastogne, St. Vith, Rochefort, La Roche, Houffalize, Stavelot, Clerf, Diekirch, Vianden and the southern eastern cantons were affected. The operation, which was originally called “Operation Christrose”, began on December 16, 1944 and initially achieved breakthroughs of 100 km into the enemy front line over a width of 60 km. The target was Antwerp, through whose port the majority of Allied supplies passed. German attacking lines came within a few kilometers of the Meuse, but on the flanks the troops were held up in protracted battles around places like Bastogne and St. Vith, which gave the Allies time to regroup and lead troops for a counter-offensive. After six weeks, the front was back to normal. The Americans were able to more than replace their losses in soldiers and material within two weeks, while the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS used up important reserves. After the failure of the Ardennes offensive, the Wehrmacht leadership named the “Wacht am Rhein” (Colonel General Alfred Jodl in his 1945 New Year’s address) as the next objective
In total, just over one million soldiers were involved in the battle. For the USA, the Battle of the Bulge was the largest land battle of the Second World War; around 20,000 casualties made it the bloodiest battle of the entire war for the US Army.
