It’s to honor the 120,000 GI’s and 80,000 German soldiers who fought a terrible battle in the Hürtgenwald from September 1944 til February 1945. 24,000 GI’s were KIA or MIA and another 9,000 were wounded. The Germans had 28,000 men put out of action of which 12,000 were killed.
This can be described as the ‘hurt’ of Hürtgenwald.
This sign was hung on a deserted farm in Hürtgen, the HQ of the 121st Regiment.
They called it The Hürtgen Hotel.

This meticulous reproduction is not merely a symbol; it stands as a profound tribute. A tribute to the indomitable spirit of the one hundred and twenty thousand GIs and eighty thousand German soldiers who valiantly battled in the unforgiving terrain of Hürtgenwald from September 1944 to February 1945.
Within those haunting woods, twenty-four thousand GIs paid the ultimate sacrifice, either killed or missing, and an additional nine thousand returned with wounds that would forever bear witness to their bravery. The German forces, too, endured the brutal toll of war, with twelve thousand soldiers laying down their lives and another 16 thousand left missing or wounded. The pain of Hürtgenwald etched into history.
The poignant sign hung on an abandoned farmhouse in Hürtgen, once the dwelling of the 121st regiment’s staff, aptly named “THE HURTGEN HOTEL.” The letters on it tell a story of agony and heroism, encapsulating the essence of the “hurt” experienced in those tumultuous months.
